GOLDFISH CREATIVE
KERERŪ
ABOUT THE WORK
The ghostly shape of a kererū (wood pigeon) is visible from far away, suspended in the air, feathers moving gently in the wind.
Individual feathers are made using recycled plastic bags, and cat collars form the coloured plumage, appearing to strangle the bird. Kererū pays homage to all the New Zealand native birds that have been lost and will be lost to predators such as domestic cats, and changes to their environment caused by human impact.
The work poses questions and encourages discussion around issues facing our native birds nationwide, and serves as a reminder of our responsibilities as kaitiakitanga.
